Placement Audition Information 2026-2027
2026-2027 School Year
Audition Submission Date: Monday, March 23 at 5:00 pm
All students involved in the Carlmont Instrumental Music Program study excellent repertoire, enjoy performing throughout the year, and have opportunities to travel and participate in social events. Ensemble placement is based on ability. Students will be placed where they will experience the most success. All ensembles are high caliber and need high-level students to serve as musical leaders within them.
As students plan their courses for next year, we want to clarify the process for placement in Carlmont’s advanced instrumental music ensembles.
Auditions are not required to enroll in the Carlmont Instrumental Music program. All students are welcome and encouraged to participate. However, enrollment in the appropriate foundational ensemble is required in order to be considered for placement in one of our advanced groups.
Incoming Students
Incoming students should enroll in one of the following two courses during registration:
- String players should sign up for String Orchestra (Intermediate Orchestra).
- Wind and percussion players should sign up for Concert Band (Band II).
Students who would like to be considered for an advanced ensemble must also submit an audition by the March 23 deadline. After registration has closed and auditions have been reviewed, Carlmont music teachers, in collaboration with counselors, will place qualifying students into the appropriate advanced ensemble. Only students who are enrolled in String Orchestra or Concert Band will be eligible for advanced ensemble consideration.
Returning Carlmont Students
Returning Carlmont students who wish to be considered for an advanced ensemble should enroll in their current music ensemble during registration and submit an audition by the March 23 deadline. Following the audition review process, music teachers and counselors will adjust placements for students who qualify. Only students who enroll in their current ensemble course during registration will be considered for advanced placement. (If you submit an audition but are not on the enrollment list, you will not be considered.)
This process ensures that there are no barriers to enrollment for any student who wishes to participate in the music program, while also allowing us to build balanced, well-supported ensembles at every level. We appreciate your cooperation and look forward to another great year of music at Carlmont.
